2023 Give Big, Get Gig Holiday Food Drive

WCTEL’s Give Big, Get Gig Holiday Drive generates more than 4 tons of food donations

Dec. 13, 2023

Abbeville, S.C. — WCTEL asked its customers and members to give big again this November. It turns out, people not only listened, but they doubled their donations since last year.

The organization’s second-annual food drive, the “Give Big, Get Gig” initiative asked customers to donate at least three nonperishable food items for area food pantries in return for receiving a complimentary speed boost to WCTEL’s premier speed tier, 1 gigabit, for the month of December.

“We are beyond blessed by the generosity of our customers and employees,” says Jeff Wilson, WCTEL CEO. “Seeing all the food in one room was astounding. People stepped up in a major way.”

The campaign, which supported food pantries in the greater Abbeville area, Greenwood County, McCormick, Iva and Newberry, generated more than 4 tons of food donations. Donations were collected throughout the month of November at WCTEL offices and donated equally across all five areas on Thursday, Dec. 7 during a company-wide coordinated effort.

“Participating customers are enjoying our fastest speed this month as a token of our gratitude for their generosity. We typically see high internet use in December, as customers are hosting friends and family. Our hope is that this speed boost ensures our customers can easily stream their favorite shows, work from home and hook up new home security equipment. If we can help their holiday experience by giving them a little speed boost in exchange for helping their fellow neighbors, it’s a win for all.”

Supported pantries included

  • UCMAC
  • Food Bank of Greenwood County
  • Iva Food Bank
  • McCormick Helping Hands United
  • Living Hope Food Distribution Center (Newberry)
